As I scroll through my Instagram feed, I often come across profiles that are doing everything right except they could use a few tweaks to help them grow dramatically. Usually, the tweaks are small and take minimal effort, but can make a HUGE impact on seeing quick growth and giving your Instagram an upgrade.
When I realized that I needed to use Instagram to grow my online business, I honestly didn’t know where to start. I felt like I was posting for months without seeing much of an impact. I started to wonder if I would ever see the results I wanted.
But one thing I did do was test, experiment and test some more. And from that I found the tweaks that I needed to see my engagement soar. My blog traffic sky-rocketed and new customers, and clients pour in everyday because of the changes I made.

If you’re doing any of these things, you’ll want to audit your Instagram strategy to connect with your audience in the best way possible.
#1 Don’t Hide Behind Your Brand
If you’re a small business owner or a solopreneur and you don’t have any pictures of yourself on your feed, you’re missing out on a HUGE opportunity. Your name on your bio, All of those things I mentioned above allow you to connect with people who could potentially be your next customer. It’s a crucial way to give your Instagram an upgrade.
When I first started building my online presence, I was scared. I would get nervous every time I had to hit “Publish” on an article. I had a logo as my profile picture across all my social media platforms. I hid behind my brand.
There would be people who knew what my brand was, but had no idea I was the one who was running it.
Then, I got a lot of feedback that people wanted to know more about the girl behind the brand, that they wanted me to share who I really was. When I did that everything sky-rocketed!
I started getting seeing engagement climb. When people commented on my posts, they would refer to me as Reese, as if they were texting a friend. I saw the number of blogs, podcasts and newspapers reaching out to me to interview me soar as I became more comfortable embodying my brand. Your clients don’t want to buy from an anonymous logo. They want to buy from you. They want to know they are working with someone like them, who gets them, and who relates to them
If you look through the list of the people you are following I bet they are just that: people.
You know some of their vulnerabilities, you know the name of their cat, you know one of their quirks. When you find it inside yourself to step out of your fear, and embody the brand you want to create, you’ll start to see your engagement sky rocket!
#2 Build your list
If you’ve recently said “I need more followers” or ” I need more traffic on my site” I want you to take a step back for a second. You’re not (I hope) just building Instagram for the sake of it.
As a businesswomen, you should be spending your precious time on Instagram because you want to build a tribe of people who love what you do,and who will purchase your products (or the products you promote if you’re a blogger or affiliate). You need a list so that you can create a business out of doing the thing you are CRAZY in love with.
The best way to keep in touch with these people: Email.
When you’re growing your Instagram following, you also want to be growing your email list so that you can keep in touch with the people who love your brand. Posting on Instagram has no guarantee that your whole following will see it. Your followers may not be on their phones, or in a completely different time zone than you. With the new algorithm, your post might not even reach their feed!
When you send an email, you can be sure that your list will be able to see what you’re sending out. Sending emails gives your list a better opportunity to connect with you and respond to your messages to get more information on how they can work with you or buy your products.
If you’re not creating a way that you can actively keep in touch with your followers, you could be missing out on thousands of dollars of missed sales opportunities. You’ve missed out on the opportunity to connect with people who love what you do again and again.
#3 Work The New Algorithm
Every major social media platform that you use for your business has a distinct algorithm that you have to understand to reach your perfect customer or client.
I know what you might be saying:
I was there too a little over a year ago. I thought Instagram was a place where you could just drop a photo, cross your fingers and magically everyone would fall in love with your photos.
After a few months with no movement on my feed, I realized that it just was NOT the case. There’s a lot you can do with the new Instagram algorithm to ensure that your photo gets in front of the most eyes, but one strategy that has helped me give my Instagram an upgrade is cultivating Instagram engagement groups.
Instagram engagement groups are tight-knit communities of like-minded Instagrammers. You can depend on others in your group to like and comment on your pictures as soon as you post them. Why is this important? Because: That time after you post is CRUCIAL.
Just like YouTube, if a freshly posted piece of content does not receive a lot of engagement as soon as it’s posted, it’s unlikely to rank high in the algorithm, which means you’re missing out on making it to the top of your follower’s feeds.
Using Instagram to grow my list of clients, and my tight-knit community of ambitious females has been one of the best choices I’ve made. I’ve gotten new clients, opportunities to be featured in magazines and newspapers all over the world, and built a community of people who LOVE what I do.
