You did it, you graduated from college and you have your degree, but then you think to yourself, “now what?” You have a vision of landing your dream job, making more money than you need and you look great while doing it. Weeks and months go by, you have applied to every open position, and you start to lose hope. The good news is that I am here to help you keep your head up on this journey.
I am going to give you a few tips for you to focus on that can really pay off in the long run.
Don’t forget the only way you will never get your dream job is if you quit trying!
When you walk in a room, own your presence, smile, and introduce yourself to everyone. You might be nervous or scared, and that is ok, focus on owning the space you are in. When you appear confident, you start to feel confident, and you begin to feel at ease, and it radiates off of you.
Be confident when it comes to communication, especially during the interview process. One thing I have realized is that I don’t give myself enough credit. I know more than I realize that I do and I know you do too. Don’t be afraid to speak up, you might surprise yourself!
Always Be Presentable
Being presentable is important for the interview process and also while you have the job. Make sure you look professional, don’t overdo it, focus on enhancing your natural beauty. Lastly, and one of the most important is your attire. Everyone has a different dress code, make sure you pay attention to what is not allowed and what is. Also, let’s say that tank tops are ok in your office, I still would choose to cover my shoulders. I always want to make sure that I am not only professional but also appropriate.
Remember, you never know who you are going to meet so always look your best. Don’t forget you are representing yourself at the end of the day. How do you want people to remember you after they walk out the door?
Remember To Network
This may be one of my most important lessons that I have learned throughout the years. I would not be where I am today without the power of networking. You never know who you might meet or where you may end up through someone else you have interacted with in your past. You should meet anyone and everyone. In the future you might need to reach out and it is always better if you have a previous interaction.
Always Be Professional
When you get a job, whether it is a full time, part time or temp position you are there to get the job done. Even if it is not your dream job, work as though it is. You never know where that position might land you in the future. If you are working hard, you’re confident, professional and networking, you will go far. When it is time for you to move on ,you will have a great reference from your boss or coworkers. Remember to do your best and you never have to worry about anything other than a positive review.
Don’t get discouraged. Every “no” is one step closer to a “yes!” I promise you that one day it will all pay off!
