I Didn’t Have A Phone For A Week: Here’s What Happened

Yes, you read that correctly. I didn’t have a phone for a week. I know what you’re thinking, “Why would this phone-obsessed blogger go without a phone for a whole week?” Newsflash: it obviously wasn’t by choice. Did I die? No. But, I didn’t have my phone with me for a killer trip to Spain, or for a few days when I came back home. I may sound dramatic, but it truly was a bummer.

How did this happen? It’s simple- and tragic. I was in a nightclub in Barcelona, which was already trap number one. If you don’t know, Europe is known for being saturated with pick-pocketers. Unfortunately, I was a victim.

No, this isn’t like that time I lost my phone in Miami.

That was me being a little too *intoxicated* and irresponsible. This was just bad luck.

I learned a few things while I didn’t have a phone for a week.

Here’s a list:

  1. I don’t have that many people to talk to.
  2. Without bluetooth, I was forced to listen to the radio. HavanaRockstar, and How Long are apparently the only songs radio stations play.
  3. I suck at driving, cell phone or not.
  4. I am thankful for Maps and Google.
  5. Real alarm clocks still exist… & I had to scavenge for one in my house.
  6. Being constantly connected to people is a lifestyle I’m not ready to give up.

Sure, it was nice not being forced to see what Becky from Bio was doing on New Years Eve, but I still wanted to see Mike’s dog do cute tricks.

Since I didn’t have a phone for a week, I also payed more attention to my surroundings. That’s something I’ve been trying to do for a few years now, but always find difficult to do with a phone as a distraction. I was able to stop and smell the roses, literally and figuratively, and that was pretty nice. My sister also let me use her phone to maintain my Snapchat streaks, which was a major must-do.

A lot of us could use a tech-detox every once in a while, and I guess this was a blessing in disguise. It could be life’s way of telling me to leave all the negativity in 2017 and welcome 2018 with fresh, open arms.

P.S. Stay tuned on my blog for a post about my trip to Spain! Other than my phone being stolen on our first night there, it was a great trip & a great way to ring in the New Year!
